Mix n Matched Bridesmaid Dresses

Gone are the days of everyone in a uniform looking gown. It’s hard enough to get your best friends to take the role of bridesmaid, let along wear a dress they’ll never want to see again —- even if they can just “shorten it up and wear it again.” Today’s bridesmaids are being given the power to select their own dresses, which is great, since the dresses will generally fit them better and be much more flattering. And, when your ladies aren’t squishing into dresses they hate, they can enjoy your wedding day and help you make it go smoothly. Isn’t that something you want to let your bridesmaids enjoy?

Here are some tips to help you coordinate your bridesmaids in their dress selection, to make sure your wedding day will still look the way your dreamed of.

1. Choose a color, or a color palette. This will generally be your wedding colors, but it doesn’t always have to be. You could choose a color to contrast with your wedding colors. Give each bridesmaid a copy of the color palette you’ve chosen, so that they have an easier time matching it to their potential dress. This will save headache later since they won’t be looking for a color they’ve never identified, such as “sea foam” or “honeydew.” They both sound lovely, but what the heck are they?

2. Set parameters. It’s so easy to say, “here’s a color, choose a dress!” Keep in mind that your girl friends may have very different ideas of what they want to wear. To avoid having your ladies showing up not looking so lady like, set some guidelines. Set guidelines on length, sleeveless VS sleeves, materials, decorations, etc. Like the color palette, it helps to have some pictures to offer ideas.

3. Pick out a bunch of dresses, and let the bridesmaids choose which ones they want. This option could be a lot of work for you, but you can pick out the dress style and colors, and then tell your bridesmaids to choose from those options. Keep in mind budget restrictions.

4. Have them custom made. There are many talented designers out there that would love to help you out by designing the dresses. They would be custom made, so they’d fit perfectly.

5. Choose a designer. Some designers or online stores carry dresses that somewhat-match during the seasons. Check out the options and choose a shop online or a brand for the girls to choose from. That will narrow down some of the variances between their styles in the end.
